Ten out of Ten at North West Closed / Trials
Wednesday, 07 October 2009
It was ten medals out of ten players for Kendal Judo Club members fighting at the North West Open Championships in St.Helens. It was also a family affair with the Lenney family and the Dixons all coming home with medals.
The event was split into age bands and in the youngest age group Billy Lenney, at Under 26 kilos, the lightest as well as the youngest Kendal fighter, made sure everyone knew about him when he went on to win the Gold Medal. Brooke Kellet at 48 kilos also climbed to the top step of the rostrum showing that all the hard work at the club training nights really pays off. Sarah Porthouse gained a silver to add to the bronze she won at the Lakeland Open with Daniel Gould coming away with a hard fought for bronze in the Under 50 kilo weight group.
In the older age bands the competitors were not just fighting for a medal and the title of North West Champion but also a place in the National Championships. All who take part in that event have to qualify by coming in the top four in the Area, in Kendal's case that is the North West ranging from Kendal through to Cheshire and includes Greater Manchester and all of Merseyside.
Katherine Lenney fighting at Under 70 kilo equalled brother BIlly with a gold medal and brother Matthew at Under 50kilo will be joining his sister travelling to the Nationals when he won a silver medal. Antony Lloyd (Under 60kilo) and Adam Dixon (Under 73 kilo) both beat off all the opposition to win the Number One position in their weights with Ben Dixon winning a bronze at Under 42 kilos.
Aaron Asplin was fighting in the next age band up (16 to 17 year olds). He was fighting in one of the more popular weights - Under 66kilos - and did exceptionally well to come away with a bronze medal.
